At 21, he took on the challenge of mastering something new and something very different from Chess ā, Martial Arts š„.
He realised ā how to grow ā and succeeded and applied his understanding in other domains .
He became a great martial artist and won two world championships after devoting to practicing , hard work š,many failures and some broken joints.
Later, he pursued Jiu-jitsu, a type of martial art originated in Brazil and with Japanese influence.
Josh says the greatest thing that happened to him was losing his first national chess championship.
It helped him to avoid key to psychological traps that he was special and smarter than others .
He could have thought himself as a prodigy but he doesnāt think š¤ he has extraordinary intelligence.
Stanford prof Carol Dweck says ā Some people see intelligence and abilities as fixed , known as fixed mindset . Josh sees them as qualities which can be developed, hence growth mindset.
Both the mindsets lead to different behaviours, results and different perspectives on intelligence.
